Old Coach Road Eucla

Day 61 – 3 May 2015

Eucla – Rest Day and a little dash of fuel to get us across the Nullarbor. (Fuel 60l at $1.66). I walked up to the old Weather Station which the government has just sold and is being prepared for private living. The old office observation deck which sits high above the building has incredible views up and down the Great Australia Bite.

Day 62 – 4 May 2015

Left Eucla today to travel further west. The route we hoped to take would take us along the Old Coach Road. This is tree height permitting. The bush certainly closes in around you as you head north of Eucla passed the golf course, but with a little patience we were able to navigate around trees and rocks. First stop was the Weebubbie Cave. I truly am amazed by size of the cave and how it appears in the middle of an otherwise flat plain. I had to use the Amesz in the panorama photos just to give some idea of their actual size.

Next stop is Steve blue car. He loves his old cars and has been wanting to photograph this car since we found it back in 2008. Before reaching the car we hit a road block, a sign we had not seen before or really expected as we thought Old Coach Road was a public road. The sign states you need permission to cross Mundrabilla and Madura Stations. Now the last thing I expected was this and also to have Telstra mobile reception as well. As we always like to do the right thing by landowners, it was onto the phone where Bree from Madura gave us permission to traverse.  (Mundrabilla Station 9030 3280 and Madura Station 9030 3447). We were so worried that we would need to backtrack to Eucla! What a relief.

After photographing Steve car we proceeded to Chowilla Doline and Abrakurrie Cave. Again I used the Amesz to show size.

As the afternoon proceeded and we progressed further down Old Coach Road, both Steve and I saw more kangaroos than we have ever seen in a day, 100s and 100s. There were mobs of roos everywhere. This also made driving much more difficult as we were also having to watch their behaviour as well as navigate the rough road.

As the morning turned into afternnon, the weather became more unpleasant and the winds began picking up large amounts of dust. Even getting in and out of the 4WD became difficult due to
the force being applied against the doors.

Last stop before leaving Madura Station is my favourite wombat burrow, it was huge 7 years ago and certainly not got any smaller.

After leaving Madura Station we headed further west on the Eyre Highway before finding a camp for the night.

Nullarbor Plains

We covered a large distance today, well at least for us, our big day of travel day took us to Newman Rockhole, sadly that is the Nullarbor part of the trip completed. Wish the weather had been a little kinder. Sometimes when you return to a place, it is not how you remember it. We found this of Norseman. Both of us could not identify exactly why, but the town was just not as glamorous as we both remember.

Camped at Newman Rock for the night.
