Photographs from Limmen National Park’s Southern Lost City – 2021
Ever since we first stumbled across Limmen National Park’s Southern Lost City back in 2006—Walkabout Week 4—we’ve been itching to return. There was something about those towering sandstone formations, standing like ancient sentinels, that left a lasting impression. Fast forward 15 years, and in July 2021, we finally made it back to this remarkable natural wonder.
The Southern Lost City is nothing short of breathtaking. The scale of these formations is immense, with dramatic rock spires rising from the earth like forgotten ruins of a bygone era. But it wasn’t until we viewed the site from the air that we truly grasped just how massive it really is—an endless maze of weathered rock stretching far beyond what we could see on foot.
We laced up our boots and eagerly set off on the 2km loop track, which, much to our delight, remained untouched from our first visit all those years ago. As we meandered through towering rock pillars and winding pathways, we recognised familiar formations from our previous adventure. One particular rock, perfectly perched on a narrow ledge, had defied time and gravity—still balanced exactly where it had been 15 years earlier. It was almost like nature’s own time capsule, untouched by the elements.
Our return to the Southern Lost City was nothing short of magical, and we couldn’t resist capturing its beauty once more. Here, we present a collection of stunning images from our time exploring this incredible landscape. Enjoy!
