Loy Krathong Festival 2023

23 November 2023

Our Thai adventure began bright and early at 8:30 am in Nakhon Sawan. Despite the smoky conditions, we set out to explore the high-up lookout near Nakhon Sawan Tower. Here, we also encountered the impressive Phra Chula Mani Chedi.

Continuing our journey, we headed towards Sukhothai. One surprising sight along the way was a series of oil well pumps, similar to those we’d seen extracting oil in the Australian outback. This unsuspected glimpse into Thailand’s oil production was a fascinating encounter (though photos were unfortunately prohibited).

Reaching our Airbnb shortly before 3 pm, we were warmly welcomed by our host, Rathada. Her delightful cafe (Check In Cafe) offered the perfect opportunity to sample delicious Thai cuisine and coffee. Rathada also informed us that Loy Krathong celebrations had begun a few days early this year (November 18-27, 2023). Enthusiastic to experience the festivities, we made plans to explore the Old Sukhothai area that afternoon.

The vibrant atmosphere was in full swing as we strolled through the bustling market, enjoying a delightful dinner amongst the open stores.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sights and sounds of Thais and tourists launching their Krathongs on the water came alive. The magical evening culminated in a spectacular Light and Sound Show, complete with dazzling fireworks.

After a truly enriching day filled with unexpected discoveries and cultural immersion, we returned to our comfortable haven at 8:30 pm, hearts brimming with the joy of a successful adventure.

Following a whirlwind of festival adventures, our week-long stay in Sukhothai offered a welcome change of pace. Mornings were dedicated to leisurely relaxation, the perfect way to recharge for the festive evenings ahead.

With lunchtime approaching, our taste buds craved the flavors of Poo Restaurant’s renowned Massaman Curry. Living up to its reputation, the dish was every bit as delicious as we remembered. Satiated and content, we returned to our hotel to extend the relaxed vibe before the evening’s Loy Krathong festivities in the Old City of Sukhothai.

Reaching the old city around 4 pm, we embarked on a quest to find a light dinner. A delightful Thai kebab stall caught our eye, offering a perfect pre-festival bite. Opting for a more laid-back experience, we ventured towards the village area of the festival. Having already witnessed the awe-inspiring fireworks and light show the night before, we decided to savor the more intimate atmosphere and soak in the sights and sounds.

As the evening unfolded, we opted for an earlier than usual return, wrapping up our Loy Krathong experience by 7 pm. A day of delicious food, cultural immersion, and a touch of festive magic left us feeling content and ready to embrace the rest of our relaxing Sukhothai stay.

Following a relaxed morning in Sukhothai, complete with coffee, photo editing, and a touch of nostalgia with Weeties for breakfast, we set off for Tak at around 9:45 am.

Upon arrival, our first stop was the River Ping. We crossed the impressive 200th Anniversary Rattanakosin Memorial Bridge – a wire rope suspension bridge with a wooden floor that provided a thrilling wobble as we traversed it. Reaching the opposite bank, the heart of the festival preparations buzzed with activity. Stages were being constructed, markets overflowed with goods, and the air crackled with anticipation.

After retracing our steps across the bridge, we caught a glimpse of the groundwork being laid for the evening’s fireworks display. Lunchtime called, and the familiar comfort of KFC at Lotus’s beckoned. Exploring further, we ventured across the canal to Big C, only to find a similar landscape of major fast-food outlets and chain restaurants. While the food courts in both malls proved slightly underwhelming, they offered a quick and convenient option.

With our next adventure in mind, we drove to check out the Soho Boutique Hotel, our potential January accommodation. The hotel’s exterior presented a promising image, conveniently situated near a convention center.

Now, the hunt for a parking spot for the evening festivities began. Confidently, we secured a spot on a quiet street a block away from the river. Little did we know, this seemingly innocuous choice would lead to an unexpected twist.

A quick coffee break at Cafe Amazon provided a welcome refreshment before diving into the heart of the parade. The festivities kicked off later than anticipated, drawing a larger crowd than expected. Despite the throngs of people, the floats were a sight to behold, adorned with vibrant colors and intricate decorations.

Wrapping up our day around 8 pm, we made our way back to the car, only to discover ourselves completely boxed in by three additional cars and several motorcycles. While this unforeseen obstacle presented a minor challenge, it did have a silver lining – more time to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the festival.

This unexpected turn of events added a touch of adventure to our Loy Krathong experience in Tak, a day filled with cultural exploration, delicious finds (and not-so-delicious ones!), and the captivating energy of the festival.

Following a late start, the morning unfolded at a leisurely pace. Lunch was a convenient affair, enjoyed downstairs at the Check In Eatery. However, the afternoon held a unique adventure in store.

Fueled by a desire for exercise, we set off for a place called “The Holy Heartland.” Intriguingly, the name evokes the image of a man-made island nestled in the shade of a giant heart shape. Unfortunately, without further information or specific details, the true nature of this location remains a bit of a mystery.

Perhaps it’s a hidden gem known only to locals, or a creative landscaping project with a symbolic meaning. One thing is certain – its name sparks the imagination and invites further exploration.

As the day drew to a close, we returned to the familiar comfort of Check In Eatery for another satisfying dinner, capping off a day of relaxation, a touch of the unexpected, and the lingering curiosity surrounding “The Holy Heartland.”

With 90 days planned for our Thai adventure, we approached Sukhothai Immigration with the hope of securing a 30-day visa extension early due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year period. The brand new office, situated near a picturesque lake, offered a welcoming atmosphere. True to Thai hospitality, the immigration officer greeted us with a warm smile and extended his utmost assistance. While securing the extension proved slightly premature, his kindness and helpfulness were truly appreciated.

Undeterred, we decided to delve deeper into the cultural tapestry of Sukhothai. By 2 pm, our explorations led us to Wat Rat Satthatham. This hidden gem emerged as a local favorite for Loy Krathong celebrations, with a majestic Banyan tree serving as the centerpiece. Encouraged by the welcoming locals, we made plans to return that evening.

True to their word, the night unfolded as a vibrant display of local customs. Music filled the air, traditional krathongs dotted the water, and the aroma of delicious food filled the atmosphere. This genuine Thai celebration offered a glimpse into the heart of the community and its traditions.

Basking in the joyous spirit of the evening, we continued our cultural immersion at Wat Ratchathani. Here, Alison joined the locals in a delightful dance, further enriching our experience and forging deeper connections. This unexpected turn of events transformed a day of administrative tasks into a memorable exploration of Thai culture and the warmth of its people. This is the side of Thailand we really enjoy.

Our Thai adventure continued with a practical stop at Big C for lunch. While satisfying our appetites, Steve stumbled upon an unexpected discovery – a tiny car from Wuling Motors, packed with features and priced at a starting point of 405,000 baht (approximately $20,000 AUD). This unique find sparked a moment of amusement and perhaps even a touch of car envy???

With full stomachs and a good dose of retail therapy, we sought a change of pace. A serene escape awaited us at Khlong Khang Kai Reservoir. The gentle murmur of water and the absence of city noise provided a welcome respite, allowing us to breathe deeply and appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings.

As the day drew to a close, we embarked on our journey home. The setting sun cast a warm glow over the lush green rice paddies, painting a picture-perfect ending to a day filled with unexpected encounters, cultural immersions, and the simple pleasure of nature’s beauty.

Our last full day in Sukhothai began with a morning stroll at 10 am. Heading towards Big C, we passed familiar landmarks like the PTT station and Amazon Cafe. Seeking refuge from the sun, we meandered down a side street, encountering a newly built housing estate in an area that seemed potentially prone to flooding.

A refreshing escape awaited us at HomePro, a one-stop shop for all things home improvement. Reminiscent of a combined Bunnings, The Good Guys, and JB Hi-Fi, it offered a cool respite from the heat and a chance to browse through various household items. Venturing across the street, we explored an office supply store, where a Chinese-branded remote CCTV system piqued our interest, presenting an intriguing product at a competitive price.

Back at the hotel, Alison took the opportunity to have the glass on her iPhone replaced at the nearby phone shop. Reunited, we settled into the restaurant for a delightful lunch. Savory chicken fried rice with a generous helping of vegetables and Alison’s flavorful Krapow Moo hit the spot perfectly.

After a refreshing rest upstairs, a short evening stroll called our names. Dinner once again enticed us at Checkin. Steve opted for a comforting Japanese pork curry on rice, while Alison enjoyed a fragrant Penang curry. To complete the culinary experience, we shared some delicious spring rolls as appetizers and a couple of beers to unwind.

Bidding farewell to Rathada and Paul, we embarked on a short drive to indulge in some post-dinner ice cream. We so enjoyed our stay with them, and we look forward to seeing them again in January when we stay here again. En route to KFC, a brightly lit car with a booming sound system blasting music caught our attention. The inviting atmosphere led us to stop, take pictures, and engage with the car’s owner. Delighted to showcase his pride and joy, he played some of our music requests, making for a delightful and unexpected social interaction.

Ice cream in hand, we cruised back to our hotel, concluding the day with a relaxing evening, basking in the warmth of the unexpected encounters and the simple pleasures of a delicious meal and good company.
