Bueng Kan Blunders (and Breathtaking Beauty): A Mekong Mishap with a Mosquito-Filled Merry Ending

Well, as our Thailand adventure continues, let’s just say, it was a rollercoaster ride of emotions (and questionable hotel accommodations). We bid farewell to Sakon Nakhon looking forward to exploring the  mighty Mekong River dancing.

Packing, Pumpkins, and Photographic Pauses

By 8 am, the car was packed, goodbyes were exchanged, and we were on our way to a PTT for a fuel top-up. Refueled and ready to roll, we hit the open road, the promise of the Mekong shimmering on the horizon. But wait! There were gorgeous green rice fields bathed in clear blue skies – a photo opportunity we simply couldn’t resist. Let’s just say, our inner Instagrammers were momentarily unleashed.

Hotel Disappointment

Fast forward to 11:30 am, and we arrived in Bueng Kan, our Mekong base camp. Hotel check-in should’ve been a breeze, except for this little detail: it wasn’t the hotel we booked. Apparently, Thailand travel sometimes throws unexpected curveballs (this is, believe it or not, the second time in five years we’ve encountered this delightful surprise). Oh, and the cherry on top? Sharing our room with an army of ants. Not exactly the luxurious welcome we were hoping for.

But hey, the show must go on! Armed with the philosophy that “a hotel room is just a place to sleep” (and hopefully, not get bitten by ants), we ventured out to explore. First stop? 7-Eleven for a much-needed lunch and some hydration supplies.

Temple Tribulations (and a Wise Decision)

By 1 pm, we arrived at the legendary Wat Phu Thok. Pictures don’t do this temple justice – it’s built right into a giant rock! Think rickety stairs, wobbly walkways, and breathtaking views from the top. Sounds thrilling, right? Well, maybe for the more adventurous souls. We took one look at that daunting climb and decided, with all the wisdom of seasoned travelers, to save it for tomorrow (and maybe some extra cups of coffee for courage).

Mekong Magic (and Muddy Mayhem)

By 3 pm, we finally made it to the Mekong River. Time to stretch our legs and soak up the scenery! We strolled along the sandy banks, marveling at the sight of farmers working with their buffalo, and fishing boats bobbing gently on the water. It was a peaceful, picturesque scene straight out of a travel brochure.

Sunset Serenity (and Market Munchies)

As the day drew to a close, we decided to chase the setting sun. Bueng Khang Long near our hotel provided the perfect backdrop – a fiery sky reflected on the water’s surface. To complete this idyllic scene, we grabbed some delicious dinner from the local markets and enjoyed it with a front-row seat to nature’s light show.

So, Bueng Kan, you’ve welcomed us with a bit of a logistical hiccup (and a whole lot of ants), but your natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere have already won us over.

Conquering Temples, Communing with Nature, and (Hopefully) Ant-Free Accommodation

Today we woke up with a renewed sense of adventure after a good night’s sleep, fortunately  ant-free). Bueng Kan, yesterday you threw us a curveball, but we’re ready to hit you back with our explorer spirit and a large can of ant killer. Woo Hoo!

Conquering Wat Phu Thok (One Wobbly Step at a Time)

First things first: Wat Phu Thok. Remember that intimidating climb we decided to postpone? Well, today was the day to face our fears (and conquer those wobbly stairs!). Clad in good shoes and armed with a healthy dose of determination, we began our ascent.

Let me tell you, those walkways weren’t exactly built for the faint of heart, but the views from each level were absolutely breathtaking.

Every step was a challenge, but the reward was worth every wobble. We reached the top feeling triumphant, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape stretching out before us.

We also met Renee and his Thai girlfriend, I think the first Aussie we had met in a long time.

Market Marvels (and a Delicious Discovery)

Back on solid ground, our rumbling stomachs led us to the local markets. The sights, sounds, and smells were a feast for the senses! We wandered through the stalls, picking up fresh ingredients and local delicacies. But the real star of the show? We stumbled upon a stall selling the most incredible mango sticky rice. The combination of sweet, creamy rice and perfectly ripe mangoes was a flavor explosion that left us wanting more (and maybe a second helping!).

Ant-Free (We Hope!) Serenity

With full tummies and happy hearts, we returned to our hotel. Crossing our fingers (and toes!), we were greeted by… no ants! Victory at last! Exhausted but exhilarated from our day’s adventures, we retreated to our (hopefully) ant-free haven for a well-deserved rest.

Bueng Kan, you’ve challenged us, surprised us, and ultimately, delighted us. From the adrenaline rush of Wat Phu Thok to the tranquil beauty of the Mekong River, you’ve shown us a different side of Thailand. We can’t wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings!

Farewell (to Ants!), Fishing Huts, and Funky Fresh Markets

We bid farewell to Bueng Kan (and hopefully, the last of our ant friends – we even named a few, just to be friendly!). With Khon Kaen as our destination, we hit the road, eager to explore another vibrant city.

Early Start, Early Wat

By 8:18 am, we were already making a detour – and for good reason! Wat Seka Chetiyaram demanded a visit. The intricate details and architectural beauty of this temple were simply too captivating to pass up. We wandered through the serene grounds, marveling at the craftsmanship and soaking up the spiritual atmosphere.

Lakeside Laps and Lens Love

Fast forward to 11 am, and we found ourselves in Kumphawapi. This charming town boasts a beautiful lake, and let me tell you, those fishing huts were calling out to our inner photographers. We snapped away, capturing the picturesque scene of colorful huts dotting the water’s edge. The vibrant pink and purple water lilies added a touch of whimsy to the landscape.

B2 Bliss (with a Minor Hiccup)

By 1 pm, we arrived at our hotel, the B2. Exhaustion set in, and a well-deserved rest was definitely in order. We checked in, ready to melt into our comfy beds for a rejuvenating nap. But wait! Fate had other plans. The afternoon was rudely interrupted by the booming sounds of a nearby nightclub gearing up for the night ahead. Not exactly the lullaby we were hoping for.

Room Revamp and Retail Therapy

Thankfully, the lovely staff at the B2 came to our rescue. A quick room switch later, and we were nestled in a peaceful haven (a huge thank you to the amazing reception team!). With renewed energy, we decided to explore Khon Kaen’s vibrant markets after a restful afternoon.

Ton Tann Green Market Triumph

Ton Tann Green Market, an old favorite from previous visits, was our destination of choice. We wandered through the stalls, our senses overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and aromas. Fresh produce piled high, local crafts on display, and the friendly chatter of vendors created a lively atmosphere. And of course, no market visit is complete without satisfying our rumbling tummies. Let’s just say, we left with full tummies and happy hearts.

Backstreets and Unexpected Delights

We opted for the scenic route, venturing through the back streets. This turned out to be a fantastic decision! We encountered friendly locals eager to chat (despite the language barrier), adding a touch of human connection to our walk.

But the real surprise? A street bursting with amazing wall art. Vibrant murals, intricate designs, and pops of color transformed the walls into open-air galleries. We couldn’t resist snapping photos and marveling at the artistic talent on display.

A Whirlwind of Wonders

Our walk took us on a journey of unexpected discoveries. First stop: The Wall. No, not Pink Floyd’s epic creation, but a local landmark that piqued our curiosity. Next up? Halong Bay Thai Food company. This venue showcased the culinary and visual delights of Halong Bay in Vietnam, a possible future trip destination for us.

Temple Triumphs and Tank Time

The Phueng Thao Kong Ma Shrine, a beautiful Chinese temple, was our next stop. We were fortunate to find  Celebrations in full swing! There was even an army tank, and the pièce de résistance? Kids clambering all over it. Talk about a unique Thailand Children’s Day experience!

Finally, after our detour-filled adventure, we reached our original destination: Wat Phramahathat Kaen Nakhon. We strolled around the lake, admiring the serenity of the temple grounds.

Rest, Recharge, and Retail Therapy

Back at the hotel, we recharged with an afternoon rest and a chance to tweak our travel plans. By evening, our energy levels were restored, and we were ready for some retail therapy. Central Shopping Centre beckoned, and we indulged in a delicious dinner followed by a stroll through the shops.

Dams, Dragons, and Delightful Detours

Today we decided to explore the wonders near Ubolratana Dam. Buckle up, because this journey was filled with unexpected delights!

Wonderland Unveiled: Wat Pa Tham Utthayan

Our first stop, at 9:45 am, was Wat Pa Tham Utthayan. This place wasn’t your average temple. Imagine artificially created forests, serene lakes, and a majestic Phra Maha Chedi under construction. It was a wonderland of nature and spirituality, a place to wander, admire, and be awestruck by human creativity.

Panoramic Perfection: Wat Phra Bat Phu Pan Kham

By midday, we arrived at Wat Phra Bat Phu Pan Kham. This temple wasn’t just a place of worship; it was a vantage point offering breathtaking views. On one side, the expansive Isan plains stretched out before us, a tapestry of green fields and distant villages. On the other, the majestic Ubolratana Dam dominated the landscape. The combination was truly awe-inspiring.

Dam Doodling and Dragon Discoveries

Our next adventure? The Ubolratana Dam wall itself! Security measures were in place, but after a quick pass through a checkpoint, we were granted access. The scene that greeted us was heartwarming – Thai families picnicking under the shade of trees, children running around with joyful abandon. It was a picture of peace and togetherness.

Exploring the Byways: Wat Pa Phuttha Phan

While cruising along the roads flanking the dam, we stumbled upon a hidden gem: Wat Pa Phuttha Phan. This temple wasn’t just another structure – it had a unique feature. The stairway leading up the mountainside was adorned with a large Naga, a mythical serpent offering protection and guidance to those who ascended. The climb was a journey in itself, and reaching the top was rewarded with not only panoramic vistas but also a heartwarming encounter.

Meeting the Monk: Unexpected Connections

At the summit, we met a local monk. The language barrier might have been there, but thanks to the magic of translation apps, we managed to have a delightful conversation. Sitting with him, sharing stories and smiles, was a truly special experience – a reminder that connection can transcend words.

Ton Tann Treats: A Delicious End to a Day of Discovery

By evening, we were back in Khon Kaen, weary but exhilarated. Our final stop? Ton Tann Markets, where we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner. Fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and the lively market atmosphere – the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural discoveries and unexpected encounters.

Khon Kaen, you’ve spoiled us with your hidden gems and heartwarming moments. We’re leaving with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of Isan and the kindness of its people. But our adventure isn’t over yet! Where will the road take us tomorrow?

Glittering Temples, Stunning Sunsets, and a 7-Eleven with a View

Today  led us to Khao Kho, a place with a temple that holds a special place in our hearts. But before we hit the temple trail, there was a little detail to address: our hotel’s next-door neighbor – a 7-Eleven. This promised to be an interesting juxtaposition of serenity and convenience!

Khon Kaen Farewell and Fuel Up

With a final wave goodbye to Khon Kaen, we hit the road at 9 am. By 10 am, the familiar rumble of our car signaled it was time for a pit stop. Morning tea and a fuel top-up at PTT – a necessary ritual on any Thai road trip.

Temple Time: Wat Phra That Phasornkaew’s Mosaic Marvels

By noon, we arrived at our destination: Wat Phra That Phasornkaew, a temple we hold dear. This place isn’t your average house of worship; it’s a masterpiece adorned with over 5 million mosaic pieces. The shimmering brilliance is a sight to behold, each piece reflecting the sunlight and creating a dazzling spectacle.

Five Buddhas and Fascinating Finds

But the mosaics are just the beginning. The temple complex boasts five enormous Buddha statues, each radiating peace and serenity. We wandered the grounds, marvelling at the intricate details and soaking up the spiritual atmosphere. There was also some beautiful models of Thai life, coin operated models – so very very cool.

Sunsets, Serenity, and a 7-Eleven with a View

Since we were staying nearby, we had the luxury of witnessing the magic of sunset over this incredible temple. The sky ablaze with vibrant colors cast a warm glow on the mosaics, creating an unforgettable scene.

And yes, about that 7-Eleven! Turns out, it wasn’t just convenient; it boasted the most spectacular view of any convenience store we’d ever encountered. Talk about grabbing snacks with a side of breathtaking scenery!

7-Eleven Slumber

After a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and a touch of retail therapy, we retired to our hotel, the familiar neon glow of the neighboring 7-Eleven a quirky reminder of our Thai adventure’s unique blend of tradition and modern convenience.

Khao Kho, you’ve welcomed us with open arms (and a conveniently located 7-Eleven!).
