Surin Elephant Festival

A crisp morning breeze greeted us in Buriram. We started the day with breakfast in the dining room a little after 6:30 AM. The spread wasn’t extensive, offering fruits, juices, eggs, and some Asian dishes. I enjoyed a couple of cappuccinos from the cafe; they were decent, though perhaps a touch strong.

Leaving Buriram, we headed towards Surin. Along the way, we stopped at Wat Ban Phluang, where we witnessed the harvest season in full swing.

Harvesters buzzed in the fields, and farmers were drying rice on the roadside. We also visited Wat Kanlayanawat, close by, and browsed through a local market, always a welcoming experience with friendly vendors.

Reaching Surin by 2 PM, we checked into our hotel. Refreshed, we ventured out for a walk around 3:30 PM and stumbled upon a parade. OK when you have sound trucks like this, you can hear the parade a long way away.

Intrigued, we decided to take a closer look. People adorned in traditional attire lined the streets, and a group of 40-50 elephants majestically paraded towards the Surin Arena.

Following the parade, we headed to the Narong Stadium for a Thai Fair, where we enjoyed delicious dinner options.

Today we found ourselves swept up in a vibrant spectacle unlike any other: the Surin Elephant Roundabout. This annual event in Surin, Thailand, transforms a simple traffic circle into a stage for a remarkable display of cultural heritage and the deep bond between humans and elephants.

Imagine a scene teeming with activity. The iconic roundabout is no longer a place for cars, but a central platform for a massive feast. Tonnes of fruit, a delectable bounty of bananas, pineapples, watermelons, and local treats, are piled high, ready to be devoured by the true guests of honor – over 200 magnificent Asian elephants.

The atmosphere crackles with an infectious energy. School children, dressed in colorful costumes, become a whimsical part of the scene. Transformed into playful grasshoppers, they flit about, adding to the joyous chaos. The air thrumming with anticipation, a parade unfolds. Dancers in elaborate costumes, their movements precise and graceful, weave through the crowds. Marchers in crisp uniforms add a touch of formality, their synchronized steps echoing off the buildings.

Big bands blare lively tunes, their music a rhythmic counterpoint to the excited chatter of the crowd. Music trucks, their speakers pumping out infectious beats, further amplify the festive mood. The very air vibrates with the energy of celebration.

We had no trouble in getting caught in the infectious merriment, as we watched on in awe as the elephants, guided by their mahouts, approach the overflowing tables. Trunks reach out, gently selecting choice morsels. The sheer size and gentle nature of these creatures create a sense of wonder. This is not just a feeding frenzy; it’s a testament to the deep-rooted connection between the people of Surin and their revered elephants.

As the elephants savor their feast, the music continues to pulsate, the dancers twirl, and the children’s laughter fills the air. This is more than just a spectacle; it’s a cultural immersion, a vibrant tapestry woven from tradition, respect for nature, and the pure joy of celebration.

After the parade we were lucky enough to meet a Muay Thai Boxing champion.

Our afternoon we more low key with us checking out Heng Phalasa Market and its planes, train and automobiles.

Today we made our way to the renowned Surin Elephant Show. This remarkable spectacle, held annually in the Surin province, is unlike any other. Here, hundreds of elephants, adorned with vibrant attire, participate in a series of reenactments and demonstrations, showcasing their intelligence, strength, and deep bond with their handlers.

The centerpiece of the event is the grand battle reenactment, a portrayal of historical conflicts involving war elephants.

Over 300 elephants, meticulously trained and guided by their mahouts (elephant riders), charge across the arena, simulating the chaos and might of ancient warfare. The trumpeting calls, the rhythmic thundering of hooves, and the vibrant display of colors create a truly captivating spectacle.

Beyond the reenactment, the show offers a glimpse into the unique relationship between elephants and their handlers in Surin. Witnessing the skillful maneuvers, the playful interactions, and the mutual respect between the two is a testament to the deep-rooted traditions of elephant care and training in this region.

The Surin Elephant Show isn’t merely entertainment; it’s a cultural immersion. It serves as a window into Thailand’s rich history and its long-standing connection with these magnificent creatures.

We really left with a profound appreciation for the elephants’ intelligence, trainability, and the unique bond they share with their mahouts. One of of our favourite displays was the elephant soccer where one of the elephant faked an injury as part of the fun.
