Photographs from Caranbirini Conservation Reserve – 2021
With our new drifting lifestyle, we decided to take a few leisurely days to soak in the delights of Caranbirini Conservation Reserve—a true outback treasure! Nestled a mere 45 kilometres from Borroloola on the western edge of the Bukalara Ranges, this reserve offered us an ideal escape from the hustle and heat. We knew we had to experience every facet of it, so we set out to explore all three of its unique trails, pacing our adventures over several sunlit days.
Our first walk was a gentle 300-metre jaunt that led us to a cosy bird hide. From this perfect perch, we were treated to the serene spectacle of the semi-permanent Caranbirini Waterhole, where waterbirds flitted about and the land whispered quiet tales of the desert. It was an idyllic spot that instantly set our hearts soaring.
Next up was the Barrawulla Loop Walk—a fun 2km trek through what we like to call the Lost City. Here, awe-inspiring rock formations, some towering up to an impressive 25 metres, rose like ancient sentinels, offering refreshing spots of shade for the local wildlife. The dramatic silhouettes against the vast outback sky made it feel like we were wandering amongst the relics of a forgotten civilisation, and every snap we took told a story of nature’s grand design.
For our final adventure, we tackled the Jagududgu Loop Walk. Advised as a 5km route but notoriously a bit longer, this trail took us through the rich tapestry of the reserve’s habitats. The expansive views stretched well beyond the reserve’s boundaries, inviting us to pause and marvel at the unspoilt, rugged beauty of the land. It was a rewarding challenge that reminded us to be a bit more careful while still relishing every moment of freedom on foot.
Every step at Caranbirini was filled with wonder and moments of pure joy, and we captured loads of lovely images along the way. Here, we present some of our favourite shots from our time at the reserve—each one a vibrant celebration of nature, adventure, and the playful spirit of the outback. Enjoy the journey through our lens, and let the landscape enchant you as much as it did us!
